Five topics, one city

From the editor

The ordinary is the beat.

The Commonplace covers the city most of us actually live in: the reading room that keeps its kettle on, the stall that runs out by noon, the bench in the awkward corner of a shared garden. We send writers out on foot, ask them to stay longer than a deadline requires, and publish what routine looks like when somebody pays attention to it.

Every story in this edition is a work of fiction written for the journal — the people, places and noticeboards are invented, and the photographs are illustrations, not documents. Save the pieces you want to return to; your reading shelf lives in this browser, on this device, and nowhere else.
